Stephen Hawking declared that God is not needed in the creation of the universe. He was justly crucified by the media. "God did not create the universe: Hawking" they shouted.
The media's reaction is quite reasonable considering the highly theistic views Hawking has expressed so far. He did once state: "All the evidence suggests that God is actually quite a gambler..." And there is NOTHING more holy than craps!
Hawking frequently referenced God in his, saying he may have created the laws of physics, and that just because the universe's conditions are suitable for life does not mean it was designed as such. Why, he's practically a priest! But wait, those statements sound uncertain. Almost as if he wasn't sure of the existence of a creator. Almost as if he was humouring the hypothesis until there was enough evidence to build a model independent of it. Almost as if now he is satisfied that we know enough to state that God is not needed.
